SHANE GRAMLING
In a world increasingly defined by the fleeting digital and the temporary, my art seeks to reconnect with the enduring and the tangible. My journey began in the vibrant explorations of high school, a period where color and form were my languages of choice. However, as life unfolded — marrying young at 19 and welcoming children into the world — the practical fears of the ‘starving artist’ narrative steered me toward a different path.
Instead, I immersed myself in marketing and graphic design, where creativity met the ephemeral nature of the digital realm so I could create something in the form of a career,, all while supporting the family I cherish.
At 38, after two decades of building a life and career in the name of practicality and profit, the call of the canvas is louder than ever. I’m 38 years in – bottled up and ready to go.
The time for practicality is has passed.
My return to art is not just a reawakening of dormant passion but a bold statement against the notion that one must choose between practicality and passion. It’s a statement of defiance.
Defiance against the impermanent, a celebration of the physical, the lasting.
It’s an exploration of what it means to create something that lasts, that speaks, that matters in a world often preoccupied with the next fleeting moment.
Through my work, I seek to capture not just images but the echoes of experiences, the depth of feeling, and the complexity of a journey long deferred. This journey back to the canvas is both a personal revival and a reconciliation — a celebration of enduring through the challenges, of defying odds, and of finally giving voice to a part of myself that has waited patiently in the wings.
Each stroke is a testament to the years of growth, understanding, and longing for a medium that transcends time.My art is my legacy, a piece of myself rendered in color and form, meant to endure as long as the memories and emotions that inspired it.
My art is a message to my past self and to others who might hesitate at the crossroads of passion and responsibility: creativity need not be sacrificed at the altar of practicality.
In the worst case, don’t give up hope – senseless play can often be differed to a later time in life.

SERIES: CLOUD PEOPLE
“Cloud People” is a series of paintings where I explore the intersection of the ephemeral and the human form in collaborating remotely with people we’ve never met in person, digital relationships spanning nearly 20 years in my career in marketing.

The figures, depicted with a variety of emotions and poses, seem to be in a state of becoming or unbecoming, their outlines blending into the canvas’s background or the cloudy forms above them.
This artistic expression invites contemplation on the fluid boundaries between the self, real-life relationships and remote relationships alike.

This piece from my “Torn” series captures the essence of emergence and the complexity of emotion through a stark contrast between the vivid turquoise and the absorbing depths of black. The profile of a face is at once part of the canvas and yet distinct, as if grappling with the very act of existence. Drips of bright yellow suggest a leaking away of essence or thought, reinforcing the theme of being ‘torn’ between different states of being – light and dark, visible and hidden, known and unknown
